Orange juice occupies a strange spot in most people's heads. It sits with breakfast, next to the fruit bowl, wearing the word "juice," and it gets logged as though it were somewhere between water and food.
The number that fixes that framing in one line: orange juice is slightly denser in calories than Coca-Cola.
That is not a reason to stop drinking it. It is a reason to pour it into a smaller glass.

Swapping a cola for an orange juice at lunch is not a calorie decision. It is a vitamin decision, and a fair one, because juice genuinely carries vitamin C, folate and potassium that a cola does not. But swapping it in and expecting the calories to fall is a mistake this table settles.

"Not from concentrate" is a logistics claim. Nobody added sugar to the concentrate version and nobody removed it; the water left and came back. The one label on that list that genuinely changes the number is juice drink or nectar, and it changes it in the direction nobody expects: upward, because the sugar added to compensate for dilution overshoots the fruit it replaced.
The one thing that does drop is vitamin C, which degrades with storage and heat, so freshly squeezed is measurably better on that axis and identical on every other. A 250ml glass takes three to four oranges to fill, delivers almost twice the calories of one orange, and is finished before you have sat down.
That difference in eating time is not a rhetorical flourish. In a 2009 Appetite study on fruit in different forms, whole apple eaten before a meal reduced total meal energy intake, while the same fruit as juice did not. And in a 2013 BMJ analysis of three long-running cohorts, higher whole-fruit intake tracked with lower type 2 diabetes risk while higher fruit-juice intake tracked with higher risk, from the same underlying fruit.

A mimosa is not a light drink because half of it is fruit. It is 150 kcal, and the juice half is more than a third of that. The same arithmetic runs through the wine breakdown: the mixer is rarely the innocent part.

Orange juice mistakes to avoid
Logging it as fruit
It is a drink with a vitamin profile. Log it in the drinks column next to the coffee and the beer, where the liquid calories actually live.
Assuming freshly squeezed is lighter
It is 45 kcal per 100ml, same as the carton. What it gains is vitamin C and flavour, not a lower number.
Reading "no added sugar" as low sugar
Pure juice never has added sugar. It has 8.9g per 100ml of its own, and once it is juice, that counts as free sugar under NHS sugar guidance in exactly the way the sugar in a cola does. The claim is true and tells you nothing.
Counting the second glass as a second portion
It is not one, per the 5-a-day rule. It is 68 more calories with no additional credit.
Refilling from the carton without counting
This is the whole game. Poured once into a 150ml glass, juice is a rounding error. Drunk in unmeasured refills from a litre carton, it is 450 kcal a weekend that never reaches a log.
Treating it as hydration

Adds up to: 56 kcal in a full 250ml glass. It reads as a longer drink than the neat version because there is more of it, which is the entire trick.
Eat the orange instead (62 kcal)

Adds up to: 62 kcal with 3.1g of fibre, four minutes of eating, and free water. Against a 250ml glass that is 51 fewer calories, ten times the fibre, and a snack rather than a sip. Whole fruit doing more with less is the same argument as high-volume, low-calorie foods.
The verdict
Orange juice is 45 kcal per 100ml, which puts it fractionally above Coca-Cola and comfortably above milk on a per-millilitre basis. Nothing on the carton changes that: from concentrate, not from concentrate, smooth, with bits and freshly squeezed are all the same number, and the only label that moves it is "juice drink," which moves it up.
