How many calories in a glass of wine? Per 125ml, 175ml, 250ml and bottle
Wine calories by glass size and type, why alcohol percentage matters far more than sweetness, and what a bottle of red actually costs you in a day.
Wine is the drink people are most confident about and least accurate on. The confidence comes from a real fact, that wine has no fat and barely any sugar. The inaccuracy comes from the two things that actually decide the number: how strong it is, and how big the glass is.
Neither is on the front label in calories. Here is the arithmetic.
The quick answer
Wine calories come almost entirely from alcohol, and alcohol is 7 kcal per gram. That makes it the second most energy-dense thing you can drink, behind pure fat and ahead of both sugar and protein.

Calories from alcohol = millilitres x ABV% ÷ 100 x 5.6
A 175ml glass of 13% red is 22.75ml of pure ethanol, which is 18g, which is about 127 kcal. Dry wine adds only a couple of kcal of residual sugar on top of that, so for anything labelled dry you can stop there.

Glass size beats grape variety, every time
The most consequential number on this page is not the wine. It is the pour.
UK licensed premises serve still wine in three legal measures, and the difference between the smallest and the largest is more than a chocolate bar.

Going from a medium to a large is 55 extra kcal for the same wine, and it happens by saying one word at the bar. Going from two mediums to two larges across a normal week of four drinking evenings is roughly 440 kcal, or about half a day of the deficit most people are running.
Home pours are worse, because nobody measures. A generous pour into a large modern wine glass is frequently 200 to 250ml, which people then log as "a glass" meaning 175ml. That gap is 25 to 55 kcal per glass, quietly, every night.
Calories by wine type
These are typical strengths for each style at a 175ml medium glass. Your bottle may differ by a percent either way, and a percent is worth about 10 kcal at this pour.

The pattern is worth staring at: the spread from the lightest dry white to the heaviest dry red is about 30 kcal per glass. The spread from a small glass to a large glass of the same wine is about 90. You are three times better off changing your glass than changing your grape.
The sweetness trap, in both directions
"I only drink dry wine" is treated as a calorie strategy. It is barely one.
Dry table wine contains 1 to 4 grams of residual sugar per litre. At a 175ml pour that is under 0.7g of sugar, worth about 3 kcal. Meanwhile the alcohol in that glass is worth 130. Sugar is a rounding error in dry wine.
Where sugar does matter is in the styles built around it, and there the trade runs both ways because sweeter wines are usually weaker.

A bone-dry 15% Zinfandel at 147 kcal per glass is more than an off-dry 9% Riesling at 109. Dry is not a calorie claim. It is a taste description.
One genuine oddity worth knowing at the bar: on prosecco labels, Extra Dry is sweeter than Brut, and Brut Nature is drier than both. The naming is historical and it catches almost everyone.
What wine does that the calorie number does not show
Two effects sit outside the arithmetic and both push in the same direction.
Fat oxidation stops while alcohol is being cleared. The body has no storage compartment for ethanol and treats it as a mild toxin, so it moves to the front of the metabolic queue. This does not mean wine calories count double. It means they arrive alongside a pause in the process you were hoping to run.
Wine makes you eat more, in the short term. Yeomans on alcohol, appetite and energy balance reviews the aperitif effect: alcohol before or during a meal reliably increases food intake at that meal, and the extra food is not compensated for later in the day. The two glasses are 260 kcal. The bread you would not otherwise have had is another 200.

The bottle problem
A 750ml bottle of 13.5% red is 567 kcal. That is more than a Big Mac, more than three quarters of an average person's evening meal, and it contains no protein, no fibre and nothing that makes you full.
Split between two people over an evening it is 284 kcal each, which is a normal thing to spend. Finished alone across a Friday night, it is a meal you ate twice.

Those pound figures assume the calories are entirely unaccounted for and nothing else adjusts, which is not how bodies work. Read them as the size of the gap in the ledger, not as a prediction. The point is only that this is not a rounding error. If you are running the arithmetic in how many calories to lose weight and cannot find the leak, wine is one of the four usual suspects.
Wine mistakes to avoid
Logging a home pour as 175ml
It is almost never 175ml. Large modern glasses invite a 220ml pour that still looks half empty. Measure once with a jug and log what you actually pour.
Assuming red is the heavy one
Colour tells you nothing. A 12.5% Chablis and a 12.5% Pinot Noir are the same 123 kcal. Strength tells you everything, and it is printed on every bottle.
Treating a spritzer as free
A wine spritzer halves the wine, which genuinely halves the calories, and that works. An Aperol spritz does not. Aperol is 11% and heavily sweetened, around 118 kcal per 100ml, so a 50ml measure is about 60 kcal before anything else goes in the glass. With 75ml of prosecco on top, a standard spritz lands near 110 to 140.
Believing the "one glass a day is healthy" line settles the calorie question
Whatever position you take on the health evidence, which has moved against alcohol in the last decade, it is a separate question from energy balance. The UK Chief Medical Officers' guideline is 14 units a week spread over three or more days. Fourteen units is roughly six 175ml glasses of 13% wine, which is about 760 kcal a week at the recommended ceiling.
Confusing units with calories
They are different scales that happen to correlate. A unit is 10ml of pure alcohol, worth about 56 kcal. The NHS page on calculating units has the arithmetic. A 250ml glass of 13% wine is 3.25 units and 182 kcal. If you track units, multiply by 56 and you have your calories for anything dry.
Three ways to spend wine well
The measured medium (127 kcal)
- Pour 175ml, once, into the glass you always use, and mark the level mentally
- Drink it with the meal, not before it
Adds up to: 127 kcal instead of the 190 an unmeasured "one glass" usually is. Drinking with food rather than before it also blunts the aperitif effect above.
The spritzer that actually works (64 kcal)
- 100ml of dry white (67 kcal)
- Top with soda water and ice, in a full-size wine glass
Adds up to: 67 kcal for a drink that lasts as long as a full glass. This is the only reliable low-calorie move in wine, because it is the only one that reduces the alcohol in the glass.
The bottle split three ways (182 kcal each)
- One 750ml bottle, 13% (546 kcal)
- Three people, 250ml each
Adds up to: 182 kcal each, which is a large glass and a reasonable evening. The failure mode is not the first bottle, it is the second.
The verdict
Wine calories are alcohol calories. Multiply the millilitres by the ABV, divide by 100, multiply by 5.6, and you have the number to within a few kcal for anything dry. At 13.5% that shortcut is 0.75 kcal per millilitre.
The lever that matters is the pour, not the grape. A small glass of a big Shiraz is fewer calories than a large glass of a light Pinot Grigio, and the difference between how much you think you pour and how much you pour is usually larger than both.
Log the pour, not the label. Calow takes the volume and the ABV and does the arithmetic, so an honest 220ml lands as 220ml instead of the 175 everyone reports.
