How many calories in ice cream? Per scoop, cone and tub
Ice cream calories per scoop, cone, lolly and tub, why per-100ml labels understate dense ice cream, and why gelato is not the lighter choice it looks like.
Ice cream is one of the few foods where the label is technically accurate and practically useless. The number is printed per 100ml, the tub is sold in millilitres, and the thing you eat is a scoop, which is neither.
The gap between those units is where the calories hide. Here is the arithmetic in grams, which is the only unit that does not move.
The quick answer
Standard dairy ice cream is 200 kcal per 100g, or 2 kcal per gram. Premium is 2.5, gelato is 1.8, light is 1.4, and sorbet is 1.3.
A level scoop is about 50g. A heaped one, which is what a scoop actually looks like, is about 70g.

Millilitres lie, grams do not
Ice cream is whipped with air during churning. The industry word is overrun, and it is the single biggest reason two tubs of the same volume can differ by a factor of two or more.
Standard supermarket ice cream is close to half air by volume. Gelato is churned with a fraction of that. So 100ml of one is not remotely 100ml of the other.

A 100ml serving of premium ice cream is double a 100ml serving of standard, and only part of that is the extra fat. The rest is that you are getting well over half as much ice cream again in the same space.
This is why the small, dense, expensive tub is rarely the modest choice, and why comparing two labels per 100ml tells you less than it looks like it does.
Gelato is not the light option
Gelato has a genuine health-halo, and the per-gram figure supports it: less cream, less fat, about 180 kcal per 100g against 200 for standard ice cream.
Then you put it in a scoop.

A scoop of gelato is 153 kcal against 110 for a scoop of standard ice cream, and the gelato is the one people order because it is lighter. Lower fat, more grams, higher total. The density cancels the virtue and then some.
None of which is an argument against gelato. It is an argument against reading a per-100g figure and stopping there, which is the same mistake that makes nut butters and oils so easy to underlog.
The tub is not a serving
This is the one that costs people the most, and it is a packaging decision rather than a food decision.

A premium tub sold as a single-hand, one-sitting object is 1,065 kcal, and the label divides it into three or four. Nobody has ever eaten three sevenths of one of those tubs.
The FDA acknowledged part of this in the 2016 nutrition label overhaul, which raised the reference serving for ice cream from half a cup to two thirds and required a "per container" column on packages likely to be finished in one go. The FDA's summary of the label changes explains the reasoning, and the serving-size page is explicit that servings are based on what people actually eat, not on what is recommended.
Package size also drives intake directly. The Cochrane review on portion, package and tableware size found consistent evidence that larger portions and packages increase how much people consume, across food types. Freezer aisle included.
Cones, sauces and the rest of the bowl
The frozen part is usually not the expensive part.

Two heaped scoops of standard ice cream is 280. In a plain wafer cone it is 295. In a chocolate-dipped waffle cone with sauce and sprinkles it is 585, and the ice cream never changed.
The cheapest upgrade on that list is fresh berries, which add bulk, cold and sweetness for 25 kcal. That is the same trick as the one in high-volume, low-calorie foods, applied to dessert.
Lollies, sticks and the freezer drawer
The novelty aisle spans an unusually wide range, from 40 kcal to 260, and the packaging gives you almost no clue which is which.

A chocolate-coated stick is 240 kcal in about 110ml. That is more than a heaped scoop of premium ice cream in a bowl, because roughly a third of the stick is a chocolate shell, and chocolate is denser than almost anything else in the freezer.
The fruit lolly at the top of the list is the outlier worth knowing about. At 40 to 70 kcal it is one of the few genuinely small desserts that still feels like a dessert.
Ice cream mistakes to avoid
Logging "a scoop" and meaning a level one
Nobody serves a level scoop. A heaped scoop of premium is 175 kcal against the 125 a level one would be. Two of those is a 100 kcal gap in a single bowl.
Comparing tubs per 100ml
Air content varies by a factor of two across the aisle, so per-100ml comparisons are comparing packaging as much as food. Compare per 100g, or weigh the bowl.
Assuming the dense artisan option is the modest one
Low overrun means more food per scoop. Gelato, premium tubs and hand-churned parlour ice cream are all denser than the supermarket standard, and all deliver more grams for the same visible portion.
Treating frozen yogurt as a diet food
Frozen yogurt is about 150 kcal per 100g before toppings, which is genuinely below ice cream. Self-serve froyo is sold by weight into a large cup and then covered in sauce and cookie pieces, and a normal cup routinely lands between 350 and 500. The base was never the problem.
Eating from the tub
The single highest-yield change available. Portion it into a bowl first.
Three ways to spend ice cream well
The measured bowl (140 kcal)
- One heaped 70g scoop of standard ice cream, into a bowl
- Tub back in the freezer before sitting down
Adds up to: 140 kcal, which fits inside almost any day. The tub is the variable, not the ice cream.
The berry bowl (165 kcal)
- One 50g scoop of standard ice cream (100 kcal)
- 150g of frozen berries, defrosted just enough to release juice (65 kcal)
Adds up to: 165 kcal for a bowl roughly three times the size. The berries provide the volume and the cold, the ice cream provides everything people actually want from ice cream.
The single stick, decided in the shop (240 kcal)
- One chocolate-coated stick, bought as one, eaten as one
Adds up to: 240 kcal, and the reason it works is that the portion decision was made at the till rather than at the freezer door. A multipack in the freezer is a different food, behaviourally, from a single bought on the way home.
The verdict
Standard ice cream is 2 kcal per gram, premium is 2.5, gelato is 1.8 and sorbet is 1.3. A heaped scoop weighs about 70g, so a scoop of the standard stuff is 140 kcal and a scoop of the good stuff is 175.
Two things carry most of the error. Millilitres are not grams, because ice cream is sold full of air and the amount of air varies wildly. And the tub is not a serving, whatever the label divides it into.
Weigh one bowl of what you normally serve yourself. It is the fastest calibration available in the freezer.
