How many calories in a sausage roll? Bakery, jumbo, mini and vegan
A standard bakery sausage roll is about 327 kcal and a jumbo one 480. Calories by size and weight, why puff pastry is the heavy part, and what a party plate adds up to.
A sausage roll is the thing you pick up on the way past. It costs a pound or two, it fits in one hand, and it is gone in five bites.
It is also a meal in a paper bag. A standard bakery sausage roll is about 327 kcal, and a jumbo one about 480. The sausage is not the main event. Almost two thirds of the calories are puff pastry, the flaky part that seems to weigh nothing.
The quick answer
At about 360 kcal per 100g, which is where most sausage rolls land.
| Sausage roll | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Cocktail | 15g | 54 |
| Party | 25g | 90 |
| Supermarket, from a pack | 60g | 216 |
| Standard bakery | 91g | 327 |
| Large | 110g | 396 |
| Jumbo | 133g | 480 |
| Big Australian-style bakery roll | 150g | 540 |
Calories by weight
| Amount | Calories |
|---|---|
| 15g | 54 |
| 25g | 90 |
| 50g | 180 |
| 75g | 270 |
| 100g | 360 |
| 150g | 540 |
Where the calories actually are
A sausage roll is two things, and they are not equal.
| Standard bakery roll | Weight | Per 100g | Calories | Share of calories |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puff pastry, baked | 37g | 558 | 207 | 63% |
| Sausage meat filling | 54g | 222 | 120 | 37% |
| Total | 91g | 360 | 327 | 100% |
The pastry is 41% of the weight and 63% of the calories. The jumbo version scales with it: about 55g of pastry at 305 kcal and 79g of filling at 175. The filling in a roll is usually lighter than a grilled sausage per gram, because it carries rusk and water as well as pork.
So this is the same pattern as the Cornish pasty and the mince pie, where two thirds of the calories are in the case.
Puff pastry is not the light option
This is the correction. Puff pastry looks like the delicate one and shortcrust like the stodgy one. The numbers run the other way.
| Pastry, baked | Calories per 100g |
|---|---|
| Shortcrust | 520 |
| Puff | 558 |
USDA FoodData Central lists baked puff pastry at about 558 kcal per 100g, with fat at about 38g. Puff pastry is made by folding fat between sheets of dough, over and over. In the oven, water turns to steam and pushes the layers apart. What you see is air. What you weigh is mostly flour and fat.
So the feeling of lightness is a texture, not a calorie count. Crumbs on your coat are the only calories that get away.
Typical nutrition
Typical pack figures. Recipes differ, so check the label.
| Per 100g | Per standard 91g roll | |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | 360 | 327 |
| Fat | 25g | 23g |
| Saturated fat | 10g | 9g |
| Carbohydrate | 25g | 23g |
| Protein | 9g | 8g |
| Salt | 1g | 0.9g |
Two lines stand out against the NHS label guide. Food counts as high in fat above 17.5g per 100g and high in saturated fat above 5g, and a typical sausage roll is well over both. One standard roll is close to half of the 20g daily saturated fat limit for women and nearly a third of the 30g limit for men.
Protein is the weak point. At about 8g for 327 kcal, it is about 41 kcal per gram of protein, compared with about 21 for a grilled sausage and 5 for chicken breast. It looks like a meat snack. By the numbers it is a pastry with a bit of meat in it.
How it compares with other bakery food
| Item | Per 100g | Typical weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mince pie | 400 | 58g | 233 |
| Sausage roll, standard | 360 | 91g | 327 |
| Sausage roll, jumbo | 360 | 133g | 480 |
| Cornish pasty | 265 | 227g | 602 |
A pasty is the bigger number and the sausage roll is the denser food. Gram for gram it is about 36% heavier than a pasty, because a pasty is padded out with potato and swede. If you are hungry, the pasty gives you more food. If you want a light option, neither one is.
The party plate
Mini sausage rolls are where the count disappears. Nobody says they had six, and nobody counts them as a meal.
| Plate | Calories |
|---|---|
| 2 cocktail rolls | 108 |
| 4 cocktail rolls | 216 |
| 6 cocktail rolls | 324 |
| 3 party rolls | 270 |
| 6 party rolls | 540 |
| Pack of six 60g supermarket rolls | 1,296 |
Six cocktail rolls is one standard bakery roll. Over a Christmas buffet, with mince pies and a drink or two, that goes quickly.
Vegan and meat-free sausage rolls
A meat-free roll can save a little. Replace the 120 kcal sausage filling with a filling at around 90 kcal and a bakery-sized roll drops to about 297 kcal. It does not save more than that, because the pastry is identical and the pastry is 207 kcal on its own.
Fillings based on mycoprotein or soya are often leaner than pork, and some have similar protein. Check the pack, and treat it as a pastry in both cases.
UK and US words that trip up logging
- Sausage roll. Not a standard US food. A US database match is likely to be a breakfast sausage in a bread roll.
- Pigs in a blanket. The closest US relative, a mini hot dog in dough. In the UK, pigs in blankets means chipolatas in bacon, which is a different food.
- Roll and sausage. In Scotland this can mean a slice of square sausage in a soft bread roll, not pastry at all. With a 65g roll at 185 kcal and a slice of square sausage at around 180, it comes to about 365.
- Sausage meat. Close to US bulk sausage, usually sold loose.
- Puff pastry. The same term in both countries, and the frozen sheets in both are close to 550 kcal per 100g once baked.
- Australian sausage rolls. Often larger than UK ones and frequently a beef and pork mix. Log by weight.
Sausage roll mistakes to avoid
Logging "1 sausage roll" without the size
Entries range from a 54 kcal cocktail roll to a 480 kcal jumbo. That is a ninefold spread. Use the weight.
Counting it as a snack
At 327 kcal a standard one is a light meal, with processed meat and about 9g of saturated fat in it. A jumbo is a full meal.
Assuming the flakes mean it is light
Air weighs nothing and fat weighs plenty. Puff pastry is denser in calories than shortcrust.
Treating a vegan roll as the healthy choice
It may be a fine choice. It is still mostly pastry, and it saves about 30 kcal, not 300.
Three ways to keep the sausage roll
Standard, not jumbo (327 kcal)
- 1 standard bakery roll (327 kcal)
Adds up to: 327 kcal, 153 less than a jumbo. A lot of the jumbo's appeal is the first few bites.
Two cocktail rolls at the buffet (108 kcal)
- 2 cocktail rolls (108 kcal)
Adds up to: 108 kcal. Take them on a plate, and stop when the plate is empty. Eating from the tray is how six happens.
Homemade with filo (about 220 kcal)
- 54g sausage meat (120 kcal)
- 20g filo pastry (60 kcal)
- 1 tsp oil, brushed on (40 kcal)
Adds up to: about 220 kcal, about 107 less than the bakery version, with the same amount of filling.
The verdict
A standard bakery sausage roll is about 327 kcal, and a jumbo one about 480. At about 360 kcal per 100g, weight is the number that tells you most. Almost two thirds of the calories are puff pastry, which is denser than shortcrust no matter how airy it looks.
It is fine as a treat. It is just more of a meal than a bite, with a poor return on protein.
If you change one thing, buy the standard one and log it as lunch.
Snap your bakery bag in Calow and the roll gets logged at its real size, not as a generic snack.
Pairs well with: the sausage calorie breakdown, the Cornish pasty calorie breakdown, and the mince pie calorie breakdown.
