How many calories in a protein shake? Per scoop and mix
Protein shake calories per scoop, per liquid and per add-in, why the milk usually costs more than the powder, and how powder compares with food per gram of protein.
Protein powder is the most carefully measured thing in most people's kitchens and one of the most consistently mis-logged. The protein number gets entered to the gram. The calories often get entered as zero.
A scoop is food. So is the milk, and the banana, and the spoon of peanut butter that turns a 120 kcal drink into a 700 kcal one.
The quick answer
A 30g scoop of whey is about 120 kcal. Whatever you mix it with is usually the larger number.

Per scoop, by powder type
The differences between powders are smaller than the marketing implies. Everything with 24g of protein in it lands within about 15 kcal of everything else.

Two things are worth pulling out of that table.
Mass gainer is the only genuinely different product on the list. Per 30g it looks unremarkable. The catch is the serving size: a single mass gainer serving is 150g of powder, not 30, so it arrives as 600 kcal with 40g of carbs' worth of company.
Collagen is the trap. It is 27g of protein per scoop on a label and it is an incomplete protein, very low in the amino acids that actually drive muscle repair. It is fine as a food. It should not be counted toward a training protein target, and it costs the same 110 kcal as whey either way.
A scoop is not a unit
This one costs people more than any powder choice, and it is invisible because the tub encourages it.

"Two scoops" ranges from 166 kcal to 600 depending on which tub is open. When you finish a tub and start a different brand, your shake changes size and nothing tells you.
Weigh one scoop on a kitchen scale, once, and record the grams. From then on log the powder by weight rather than by scoop. It takes thirty seconds and it fixes the error permanently.

Milk is not a mistake. It brings 10g of protein and a much better texture, and if you are trying to gain weight it is the correct choice. It is only a problem when it is unlogged, which it usually is, because the shake gets recorded as "protein shake" and the shake in someone's head is powder and water.

The three at the bottom are where shakes go wrong, and they go wrong quietly because they are all genuinely good foods. A tablespoon of peanut butter is 180 kcal and it does not look like 180 kcal on the end of a spoon.
Stacked up: powder plus semi-skimmed milk plus a banana plus 30g of peanut butter plus 40g of oats is 700 kcal. That is a full meal, and it is a perfectly reasonable one. It is only a problem if you have been calling it a shake and counting it alongside lunch.

Whey isolate is roughly the most calorie-efficient protein you can buy, and lean fish, egg whites and chicken breast are within 25% of it. That is the honest case for powder: it is convenient, portable, fast and cheap per gram, and it is not nutritionally superior to a tin of tuna or a pot of skyr.
The evidence agrees with the modest version of this claim. A systematic review and meta-analysis of protein supplementation and resistance training found that supplementing does improve gains in muscle mass and strength, but the effect is small and it diminishes once total daily protein is already adequate. Protein shake mistakes to avoid
Logging the protein and not the calories
The most common error by a distance. Two shakes a day with powder alone is 240 kcal. With semi-skimmed milk it is 530. Over a week that is enough to erase a deficit entirely, which is one of the reasons covered in why you might not be losing weight in a calorie deficit.
Counting in scoops
Scoops range from 25g to 75g across products. Weigh yours once and log grams.
Treating the milk as part of the drink rather than part of the day
It is 105 to 190 kcal and it is the larger half of most shakes.
Counting collagen toward a training target
It is an incomplete protein. It costs the same calories as whey and does not do the same job for muscle.
Buying a mass gainer by accident
If the tub says the serving is two or three scoops and each scoop is 75g, that is a 600 kcal serving. This is not a flaw in the product, it is the entire point of it, and it is the wrong product for anyone in a deficit.
Adding peanut butter, oats and a banana and calling it a shake
That is 435 kcal of add-ins. It is a good meal. It is not a shake.
Three ways to spend a shake well
The deficit shake (160 kcal)

Adds up to: 685 kcal with 45g of protein, which is a genuinely useful drink if you are trying to eat more than your appetite wants. It is the same recipe that ruins a deficit, used deliberately.
The verdict
A scoop of protein powder is 120 kcal and 24g of protein. That is the only number in this article that stays still, and it is the one people most often record as zero.
Everything else in the glass is a decision. Water to whole milk is 190 kcal. A spoon of peanut butter is another 180. A scoop from a different tub can be 45 kcal more than the one you are used to.
Weigh your scoop once, then log the powder in grams and the liquid separately. Both take a few seconds, and together they close the most common gap between what people think they drank and what they actually did.
