How many calories in a crumpet? Plain, buttered and topped
A standard crumpet is about 99 kcal, lighter per gram than bread. Why a buttered crumpet still beats buttered toast, and what each topping adds.
A crumpet looks like it should be a light thing. It is spongy, full of holes, and weighs less in the hand than its size suggests. On its own, that impression is correct: a crumpet is lighter per gram than bread.
The holes are the problem. They are the reason a crumpet exists, and their job is to catch melted butter. A slice of toast holds butter on its surface. A crumpet holds it all the way through.
The quick answer
Per 100g, and per typical piece, before toppings.
| Item | Calories per 100g | Typical weight | Calories each |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crumpet, standard | 180 | 55g | 99 |
| Crumpet, large or "giant" | 180 | 70g | 126 |
| Mini crumpet | 180 | 25g | 45 |
| Pikelet (thin, no ring) | 190 | 30g | 57 |
| Scottish crumpet (thin, pancake-like) | 230 | 40g | 92 |
| English muffin, white | 225 | 60g | 135 |
| White bread, supermarket slice | 265 | 28g | 75 |
The crumpet figure matches the main UK supermarket brands, which mostly land between 170 and 190 kcal per 100g. The USDA database carries a few entries for crumpets in the same range, and the English muffin entries confirm the higher density of a bread dough.
Calories by weight and by count
| Amount | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mini crumpet | 25g | 45 |
| 1 standard crumpet | 55g | 99 |
| 1 giant crumpet | 70g | 126 |
| 100g | 100g | 180 |
| 2 standard crumpets | 110g | 198 |
| 3 standard crumpets | 165g | 297 |
| 4 standard crumpets | 220g | 396 |
| Whole pack of 6 | 330g | 594 |
The butter, which is the real number
Butter is about 717 kcal per 100g, as the butter breakdown sets out. The question is how much of it a crumpet takes, and the answer is: more than you would put on toast.
| Butter on one crumpet | Butter weight | Butter calories | Crumpet plus butter |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | 0g | 0 | 99 |
| Thin scrape | 5g | 36 | 135 |
| Normal spread | 10g | 72 | 171 |
| Melted into the holes | 15g | 107 | 206 |
| Generous, pooling | 20g | 143 | 242 |
The "melted into the holes" row is the honest one for most people. A hot crumpet draws butter down into the holes, the top looks dry again, and more goes on. At 15g, the butter is 107 kcal on a 99 kcal crumpet. The topping has become the bigger half, which is the same pattern the pancake breakdown finds with chocolate spread.
Crumpet against toast
This is the comparison most people actually want.
| Breakfast | Bread | Butter | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 slice of toast, 10g butter | 75 | 72 | 147 |
| 1 crumpet, 10g butter | 99 | 72 | 171 |
| 1 crumpet, 15g butter (realistic) | 99 | 107 | 206 |
| 2 slices of toast, 10g butter each | 150 | 144 | 294 |
| 2 crumpets, 10g butter each | 198 | 144 | 342 |
| 2 crumpets, 15g butter each | 198 | 214 | 412 |
Per gram, the crumpet wins. Per piece, with butter, it loses by 24 to 59 kcal. Two crumpets the way most people butter them are about 118 kcal more than two slices of buttered toast.
That is not a reason to give up crumpets. It is a reason to log them as crumpets rather than as toast, and to notice where the extra comes from. The bread breakdown has the slice weights if your toast is thicker than a supermarket loaf.
The toppings, per crumpet
| Topping | Amount | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Yeast extract (Marmite) | thin tsp (4g) | 10 |
| Light spread | thin scrape (7g) | 20 |
| Jam | 1 tsp (7g) | 18 |
| Honey | 1 tsp (7g) | 21 |
| Golden syrup | 1 tsp (7g) | 23 |
| Butter | normal spread (10g) | 72 |
| Poached egg | 1 large | 72 |
| Peanut butter | level tbsp (16g) | 95 |
| Chocolate hazelnut spread | 1 tbsp (16g) | 86 |
| Cheddar, melted on top | 30g | 121 |
| Butter and jam | 10g plus 1 tsp | 90 |
| Butter and Marmite | 10g plus thin tsp | 82 |
The light end is genuinely light. A crumpet with a thin scrape of Marmite is about 109 kcal. A crumpet with butter and cheese melted on top is about 292, which is a full meal's worth of a breakfast that looks like a snack.
The poached egg is the outlier worth knowing about. At 72 kcal, it costs the same as a normal spread of butter and adds 6g of protein, which turns a crumpet into something that lasts until lunch. The eggs breakdown has the rest of the egg numbers.
Salt, the other thing in a crumpet
Crumpets are raised with both yeast and a raising agent, and the batter carries a fair amount of salt. Two crumpets commonly provide somewhere around a sixth of the NHS adult maximum of 6g of salt a day, before salted butter or yeast extract goes on top. Check the label on your brand. It is a bigger salt decision than most breakfasts.
UK and US words that trip up logging
- Crumpet. Has no real US equivalent. A database search in a US-built app often returns an English muffin instead, which overcounts a crumpet by about 36 kcal each.
- English muffin and muffin. In the UK, a "muffin" can still mean the flat bread roll Americans call an English muffin. In both countries it now usually means the sweet cake-style muffin at 350 to 450 kcal, which is a different food entirely.
- Pikelet. A thinner crumpet cooked without a ring. In Australia and New Zealand, "pikelet" means a small thick pancake, closer to a Scotch pancake.
- Scottish crumpet. A thin, slightly sweet pancake-like round, sold flat and often eaten cold with butter and jam. Same word, different food.
Crumpet mistakes to avoid
Logging a crumpet as a slice of toast
One crumpet is 24 kcal more than a supermarket slice before any butter, and it takes more butter. Two buttered crumpets logged as two slices of toast undercount by over 100 kcal.
Re-buttering as it soaks in
The first spread disappears into the holes and the crumpet looks dry. The second spread is usually where the total doubles. Butter once, wait ten seconds, and decide then.
Eating straight from the pack
A pack of six is 594 kcal before butter. They are quick to toast, easy to eat two at a time, and there is no natural stopping point other than an empty packet.
Assuming the light topping is the healthy one
Jam on its own is light at 18 kcal a teaspoon. Butter and jam together is 90. The jam is not the expensive part.
Three ways to have crumpets without the butter tax
The protein crumpet (171 kcal)
- 1 standard crumpet (99 kcal)
- 1 poached egg (72 kcal)
- Black pepper
Adds up to: 171 kcal with about 9g of protein, the same calories as a crumpet with a normal spread of butter. Two of these is a 342 kcal breakfast with 18g of protein.
The classic, measured (270 kcal)
- 2 standard crumpets (198 kcal)
- 5g butter each, spread on cold and then toasted again for 30 seconds (72 kcal)
Adds up to: 270 kcal. Putting a thin scrape on a crumpet that has cooled slightly and returning it to the toaster or grill spreads a small amount of butter much further than piling it onto a hot one.
The savoury one (230 kcal)
- 2 standard crumpets (198 kcal)
- Thin Marmite on each (20 kcal)
- Sliced tomato (12 kcal)
Adds up to: 230 kcal. It is the lightest way to keep the crumpet at the centre of the plate, and the yeast extract does the job butter usually does: salt and flavour in a thin layer.
The verdict
A standard crumpet is about 99 kcal, and about 171 with a normal spread of butter. Per gram it is lighter than bread, at 180 kcal per 100g against 265. Per piece, and once buttered, it is usually 24 to 59 kcal heavier than a slice of toast.
The holes decide the meal. Butter soaks in, more goes on, and at 15g the butter is bigger than the crumpet.
If you change one thing, butter it once and let it soak in before deciding whether it needs more.
Snap the plate in Calow before the butter goes on, then again after. The difference between the two photos is the part of a crumpet breakfast most people never log.
Pairs well with: the butter calorie breakdown, the bread calorie breakdown, and how many calories in a scone.
